This is an early gameplay prototype of a chess game with additional custom pieces.

The browser experience is pretty good! The AI makes some weird moves sometimes (i tried the hardest mode), but it's pretty good for in browser. The game is very responsive.

I think, clearly the biggest flaw this game has, it's very hard to know what move we can do. You should show what squares can a piece reach when you click on it. It's a basic feature of chess websites, and it's even more required when there's new pieces. It's even worse when the custom moves arent intuitive to execute. I have no clue how to perform the 'telekinesis' move for example.

Also I'm not a fan of how the board or the pieces look, I don't think it helps picturing the moves either lol.

Also it's not clear whats a 'Banshee' is too from the Bishop's description.

But all in all I had a lot of fun trying to beat the strong AI. Good luck with your project! If you have a discord I'd love to try the builds and give more feedback on balance and whatnot.


edit: okay i found how you can do telekinesis, but you cannot do it when you're in check to block the check?

Also Fighter is already OP but it's really weird how it cannot take the King on its second move i gotta say lol

I totally agree about the visualization of how the pieces move, so I will try to do something about that.
Regarding the telekinetic not being able to block check, that should work. So I think it might be a bug.

The fighter capturing the king on the second move is kind of difficult for me to decide on how I think it should work. I'll wait and see how other players feel about it before I change it I think.

About the art style, is it just personal preference you think? Any specific things you don't like, or you're not just a fan of the 2D cartoony look in general?

Regarding the art style, it's a bit of personal preference and a bit of I think it's hard to see the pieces this way. Maybe add a white contour around the pieces or some perspective effect, or have the contour be a different color from the lines inside. The pieces sometimes overlap and it's not that clear? I feel like the King and Queen looks a bit too similar, the knight could be facing sideways (like its usual representation) to be more visually clear. I think in general pieces could have a better silhouettes but heh. Or maybe different colors or use gradients or make every piece shorter.


I just feel like here for example it's kinda hard to read.Also lol you can really take every pieces with just the Warrior piece only, even in hard difficulty.
